Then she killed his brother.

Now, she shall pay.

Excerpt (250 words):

When Melianne came to again, she was in a cage suspended from a high dark ceiling. To be precise, her body, still swathed in her white priestess robes, was in the cage. But her wrists and her neck had been locked in pillory; her hands and her head protruded from the top of the cage like some crude parody of a jack-in-the-box.

She did not otherwise recognize her surroundings. A drab stone hall, lit with flickering torches. A musty dankness lingered in the air.

“Your sense of style appears to have deteriorated,” she remarked, seeing him nowhere, but certain that he must be watching regardless.

The beat of wings. A whisper of wind. A chill ran down her back.

“Has it?” his voice murmured in her ear. “I disagree. Rather, I know now that my taste has always been questionable.”

Melianne fought the urge to turn her head – to him or from him, she was not certain – but a sudden jolt took that decision from her. The iron around her throat tightened and burned white hot, bringing tears to her eyes. Her hands scrabbled at the air, but she succeeded only in rubbing her wrists raw.

It seemed an eternity before the iron cooled and she stood, gasping, knees shaking and bereft of strength. Those accursed restraints were the only thing holding her upright.

“Ah, yes,” said Ainez, his voice floating from somewhere far away once more. “You never were a screamer. But that is good. I would have been rather disappointed if you had broken so soon.”
